The Spin-Other-Orbit Interaction and Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy

چکیده
We report the effect of the two-body, spin-other-orbit interaction on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of the 3d transition metals. The relevant energy differences were computed for bcc Fe, fcc Ni, and hcp Co using a linearized augmented plane wave method to solve the scalar relativistic KohnSham equations in the local spin-density approximation. The spin-otherorbit interaction was incorporated at the level of the Hartree approximation. Special care was taken to guarantee the correctness of our numerical procedures. We find that the spin-other-orbit interaction does indeed change the anisotropy energy, but the effect is too small to account for the disagreement with experiment found in previous calculations for all three elements. 75.30.Gw,71.15.Rf,71.70.Ej Typeset using REVTEX

Spin-orbit coupling effect in (Ga,Mn)As films: Anisotropic exchange interactions and magnetocrystalline anisotropy
The magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) of (Ga,Mn)As films has been studied on the basis of ab initio electronic structure theory by performing magnetic torque calculations. An appreciable contribution to the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy can be attributed to an extended region adjacent to the surface. Calculations of the exchange tensor allow to ascribe a significant part to the MCA to the exch...

The origins of the anomalous temperature dependence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in (Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}B alloys are elucidated using first-principles calculations within the disordered local moment model. Excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained. The anomalies are associated with the changes in band occupations due to Stoner-like band shifts and with the selective suppression...
متن کاملSpin-orbit Coupling Effects in Multiferroic Bi2FeCrO6
For application in integrated sensors or devices, functional materials are used in the form of thin films. Ferroelectricity and many other properties of multiferroic materials, such as the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, are strongly related to the material crystal structure. Because fundamental physics of multiferroic materials is rich, theoretical studies are of great importance, since it is e...

Large magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) is a critical requirement for nanomagnets for applications in magnetic memory and storage devices. Due to small spin-orbit interaction the MAE of ferromagnetic films or single molecule magnets based on 3d metals is small and in typical magnetic nanostructures it is of the order of 2-3 meV. We show that MAE as high as 140 meV can be achieved by ap...

Magnetic anisotropy (MA) is one of the most important material properties for modern spintronic devices. Conventional manipulation of the intrinsic MA, i.e., magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA), typically depends upon crystal symmetry. Extrinsic control over the MA is usually achieved by introducing shape anisotropy or exchange bias from another magnetically ordered material. Here we demonstrat...
